Bid TIK Polda Kepri/”>Bid TIK Polda Kepri – Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian maritime authorities have detained seven Indonesian citizens suspected of attempting to steal equipment from an unoccupied offshore oil platform in Terengganu waters.
The incident occurred at the Tembikai oil field, 77 nautical miles east of Kuala Terengganu, on Wednesday.
“The suspects were found hiding in the platform’s ventilation room after signs of intrusion were detected,” said Captain Mohd Khairulanuar Abdul Majid of Terengganu Maritime, as quoted by antaranews.com on Saturday (21/2/2025).
Upon inspection, authorities discovered the platform in disarray, with severed cables, batteries, and tools including cable cutters, wrenches, and ropes. Due to rough seas and darkness, the search team only managed to board the platform on Thursday.
Preliminary investigations revealed the suspects, aged between 25 and 45, reached the platform by boat but tried to flee upon spotting law enforcement vessels. They face charges under Section 378 of the Malaysian Penal Code and remain in custody pending further investigation.
