Police Hunt for Chinese Mastermind Behind Online Dating Scam

Bid TIK Polda Kepri/”>Bid TIK Polda Kepri – Jakarta. The Gambir Police Office in Central Jakarta are searching for a Chinese man, who is believed to be the mastermind behind an online scam operating under the guise of a dating app. 

The Chinese man, identified as AJ, is currently on the police’s most-wanted list.

“AJ is the boss behind this scam, and we are looking for him. He is a foreign citizen from China,” said Senior Inspector Rezeki R. Respati, the Gambir Police Chief, on Tuesday (28/1/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com 

He explained that AJ directed local leaders, identified as INB, AKP, and RW, to execute the scam. 

The group targeted foreign wealt women, offering them lucrative investment opportunities with returns of up to 25 percent. The victims were misled into believing they were investing in a legitimate platform. 

The scam was uncovered on 22 January 2025 at an apartment in Central Jakarta, with 20 suspects arrested.  The 20 suspects, involved as either operators or leaders, were paid a monthly salary ranging from Rp 5 to 7 million in cash by AJ.

The police has also confiscated 28 laptops, 94 mobile phones, and 90 SIM cards as evidence

The suspects face prosecution while the police continue their search for AJ.
