Mary Jane Veloso, a death row inmate convicted of drug trafficking, has been transferred from Yogyakarta Women’s Correctional Facility to Jakarta Pondok Bambu Women’s Prison in preparation for her repatriation to the Philippines on Sunday evening.
“The transfer of inmate Mary Jane Veloso was carried out smoothly and securely,” said I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, the Deputy Coordinator for Immigration and Correctional Affairs at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, in a written statement on Monday (16/12/2024).
Officials arrived at the Yogyakarta prison at 10.30 pm to complete administrative procedures and handover documentation. Mary Jane departed in a vehicle operated by the Directorate General of Corrections at 11.00 pm, accompanied by a team from the Gunung Kidul Prosecutor’s Office, according to antaranews.com..
Her transfer follows a practical agreement signed between Indonesian officials, represented by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and Philippine Deputy Justice Minister Raul T. Vasquez in Jakarta on 6 December 2024.
