Bid TIK Polda Kepri – Jakarta. The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, considered the transfer of foreign prisoners, including Filipino drugs convict Mary Jane Veloso, in response to requests from their home countries.

During a meeting with the Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia on Monday (11/11/2024), he explained that this decision aligns with mutual cooperation between the two nations to uphold international law and diplomacy.

“We have discussed this matter internally and with President Prabowo Subianto,” Minister Yusril said, adding that the Ministry is drafting policies to address foreign prisoners in Indonesia, which could involve bilateral negotiations or agreements for prisoner transfers.

If Veloso is transferred, she would complete her sentence in the Philippines under Indonesian judicial decisions, according to antaranews.com.

Minister Yusril emphasized that while Indonesia respects the Philippine government’s request, the legal sovereignty of Indonesia must be upheld, including respecting Indonesian court rulings.

Veloso was arrested for drug trafficking in 2010 and then sentenced to death. Granted a temporary reprieve in 2015, she has remained on death row ever since.
