Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat confirmed on Saturday (1/1/2025) that the Directorate of Consular Affairs is facilitating communication between Indonesian authorities and the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta.
“We continue to assist in facilitating coordination with the relevant agencies to address this issue,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The Chinese Embassy in Jakarta has sent an official letter to the Foreign Ministry regarding extortion incidents at Indonesian airports. The embassy reported that, with the Foreign Ministry’s help, they have worked with immigration authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to resolve at least 44 extortion cases, returning a total of R 32.75 million to over 60 Chinese citizens.
In addition, the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta requested that signs be posted at immigration checkpoints, in Indonesian, Mandarin, and English, warning against tipping and reporting extortion. The Embassy also urged travel agents to discourage tourists from bribing immigration officers.
